Water pollution Flashcards
Causes of water pollution in urban areas ?
Industrial waste, Air pollution can lead to acid pollution, Rubbish dumps leak pollutants, Untreated sewage,
Consequences of water pollution ?
Organic materials cause eutrophication, Cholera and typhoid, Microbial pollutants result in infectious disease to aquatic life.
Solutions to water pollution ?
Water treatment plants (mainly in hics), Reduce run off through permeable surfaces, Education and awareness (don’t wash nappies down toilet)
How to manage water pollution in HICs ?
Water treatment plants, Regulations aimed at polluters such as industries which discharge water pollution.
Why is it hard for LICs to manage water pollution ?
Lack of money and technology, effective legislation is often absent and enforcement of pollution controls limited.
What is Low-Impact Development (LID) ?
A stormwater management approach that can help reduce stormwater run-off - done primarily through use of vegetation and permeable surfaces and has been shown to reduce organic materials, oils and heavy materials by up to 90%.
What is Legislation, regulation and enforcement in managing water pollution ?
Anti-pollution laws and agreements, some places charge if they are polluting.
Regulation works by factories allowed to discharge limited amounts and slowly reducing the levels year by year.
What is education and awareness in managing water pollution ?
The more people know about the causes and effects the more likely they will avoid adding to the problem e.g flushing wet wipes down toilets cause sewage blocking.
What are two other ways in water pollution strategies ?
Improvements in sewage and wastewater processing and appropriate technology.
What is the purpose of the Thames Tideway Tunnel ?
Upgrade Londons sewage system.
Why have they decided to construct the sewage system ?
Because during periods of heavy rain the victorian sewage system discharges raw sewage into the Thames killing aquatic life and threats to health.
How many tonnes of sewage was washed into the Thames in 2013 ?
55 million tonnes.
