Water Pollution Flashcards
Water pollution sources
Persticides and inorganic chemicals
Thermal pollution
Pesticides and inorganic materials examples
Pesticides like DDt
MEtals like zince ,copper from industrial waste
Oil from ships leakage
Thermal pollution
increase in water temprature decrease dissolved oxygen
solution of thermal pollution
is to store hot water in cooling ponds before discharging it to the sea
Eutrophication
The enrichment of water bodies with nutrients causes Entrophication of the water body
Methods for Control of Water Pollution and Water Recycling
Water Recycling
Wastewater Treatment
Control of Water Pollution
Water treatment main stages
pretreatment - bar sceen (removes large solid substances)
Primary :
1- gritt tank -sewage flow slowly thru so that particles settle down
2-Settling tank- the sludge settles down and scum floats
secondary :
3-Aeration tank - air blower generate bubbles which helps bacteria to grow and to feed on organic contaminants.
4- digester - sludge3 is decomposed b anerobic baccteria 0 biogass is produced
5-clarifier - sludge is settled out by gravity
6- the leftover waste water is treated by chlorine to remove the phosphorus compounds
The residue obtained from primary treatment one known as sludge
measures to control water pollution
water requirement should be minimized by altering the
techniques
Water should be reused with or without treatment.
Recycling of water after treatment should be practiced
The quantity of wastewater discharge should be minimized.
Water pollution Solutions
Chlorination
Public awareness
URBAN AND INDUSTRIAL WASTE WATER TREATEMENT
Enforcing existing laws
Industrial waste water treatment
chemical proccess (remove ca from &minerals to soften water - bubbling co2 into water to address water ph)
Physical process-simple filtration
Removal of heavy metals (Oxidation , Lime treatment ,Electrodeposition
Sludge
Produced during waste water treatment
ALUM SLUDGE
Treatment - heat treatment , sludge dewatering ,anerobic digestion
Sources
point source - pollution occur when pulluting substance is emitted directly into the water way
nonpoint source - occurs when there is a runoff of pollutants into a waterway
aquifer
is underground layer of water bearing a permeable rock
Pumping underground water quickly can pump up sewage that was orignally flowing downhill.
BOD (biochemical oxygen demand)
is the demand for oxygen caused by any organic material that is being broken down by microbes
