water- lqc 4 Flashcards
why is water a dipole molecule?
A water molecule has an unevenly distributed electrical charge (giving a slightly positive charge on each hydrogen and a slightly negative charge on the oxygen)
properties of water
-Water is a good solvent - ions and polar molecules can dissolve in it.
-Water hasa high boiling point which means it can flow, allowing mass flow/transport in blood and the plant xylem.
-Water has a high specific heat capacity.
define specific heat capacity
The energy needed to raise the temperature of 1 gram (1cm3) of a substance by 1c
define solvent
liquid that many substances can dissolve in
define hydrophobic
Water-repelling (non-polar molecules which do not dissolve in water)
define hydrophilic
Water–attracting (polar molecules/ions which dissolve in water – water surrounds them)
