water key terminology I didn't know from pmt Flashcards
anticyclone
a system of high pressure causing high temperatures and unseasonably high evaporation rates
crysophere
a global water volume locked up within a frozen state - snow and ice
depression
a system of low pressure with fronts of precipitin where low and high pressure air masses meet
drainage basin
area of land drained by river and its tributaries
drought
an extended period of deficient rainfall RELATIVE to the statistical average of the region
economic water scarcity
where water sources are available but insufficient as economic wealth limits ones access to it
frontal precipitation
where air masses of different temperatures meet at a front, one mass will be forced over another causing precipitation beneath the front.
ground water flow
water moving horizontally through permeable/ porous rock due to gravity
integrate drainage basin management
establishing a frame of coordinated efforts between administrations (e.g. the local government) and stakeholders( e.g. businesses) to achieve a balanced management of a drainage basin
interception
rain being prevented from reaching the ground as it instead hits the leaves of a tree
monsoon
a drastic variation between wet and dry season for sub-tropical areas caused by a hanged prevailing wind which can lead to annual flooding e.g. Bangladesh
physical water scarcity
a physical lack of available freshwater which can’t meet the demand of the population
relief precipitation
precipitin caused when air masses are forced to rise over high land, determined by the relief of the land
river regime
the pattern of river discharge yearly
saltwater encroachment
the movement of saltwater into freshwater aquifers/soils. this kay be cause by sea levels rising, storm surges or over extraction
