Water Cycle Flashcards
(23 cards)
What is evaporation
The transfer and change of water from the ground into water vapour in the air. Water vapour is an invisible gas.
What is transpiration
The transfer and change of water vapour in the air
What is condensation
Water vapour in the air changes back into a liquid. It forms small droplets which are visible as a cloud
What is precipitation
The transfer of water from the air to the land.water can fall to the earth as rain, hail, sleet or snow
What is surface water
The transfer of water back to the sea over the ground surface. It is called surface run-off. It is easiest to see where I forms river
What is ground water
The transfer of water through the ground back to sea
What is interception
Water is intercepted by the leaves of trees when it rains
What is saturation
When the ground is unable to contain a more liquid
What is impermeable surfaces
A surface that water cannot pass through
What is infiltration
It is the process by which water on the ground surface enter the soil
What is percolation
When water moves downwards through the soil
Where does the heat energy come from
The sun
Does warm air rise or sink
Rise
What is a river basin
It an area of land where rain collects
What is a tributaries
It’s a small river or stream that flows into a larger river or stream
What is confluence
It is a meeting of two or more bodies of water
What is a water shed
The boundary or edge of a river basin is called a water shed it is usually in high ground
Where does the river begin
It begins at its source
What is a channel
A river flows in the the channel. The channel has banks and a bed. Floods occur when a river overflows it channel
What is the mouth
Rivers flow into the sea or a lake. The end of a river is called a mouth.
What is the water cycle
The never ending movement of water between the sea, the land and the air. It is also known as hydrological cycle
Define the word river flooding
The rise of a river to an elevation such that the river overflows it natural banks causing or threatening damage
What is an estuary
An estuary is a partly enclosed coastal body of brackish water with one or more river or streams flowing into it and with a free connection to the open sea
