What is it?
The Tigris and Euphrates river is a transboundary water resource that begins in eastern Turkey then flows through Syria through Iraq into the Persian Gulf.
What does it aim to afdress
The scheme aims to address the droughts in the southern Turkey which includes the major cities of Instanbul and Akara. includes 22 dams, 19 HEP stations and which aim to produce 22% of Turkey’s electricity by 2020. $32 billion cost.
Facts
1.7 million hectares of land intend to be irrigated through this scheme
Money generated will go to improving levels of development by creating better education, healthcare and employment
However as a result of the gap scheme Iraq have experiences up to 80% shortages in their supply of the river and Syria have experienced 40%.
Completion of the illisu dam will flood the ancient city of Hasankef. 25,000 people will be impacted by the flooding of 50-68 villages/hamlets. 60,000 people will be displaced.
