Water and Life Flashcards
Polar Covalent Bonds
when electrons in a covalent bond are distributed unequally
Polar
when a molecule’s overall charge is unequally distributed
Cohesion
hydrogen bonds hold water molecules together
Adhesion
clinging of one substance to another
Surface Tension
hydrogen bonding of water molecules leads to a high surface tension
Specific Heat
amount of heat needed to change temperature by 1 degree C for 1 g of a substance -> water has a high specific heat
Hydrophilic
substance with affinity to water (some hydrophilic substance are to large to be dissolved by water, ie: cellulose)
Hydrophobic
substance without affinity to water, nonionic/nonpolar -> repel water, can be caused by prevalence of C-H bonds
pH
concentration of H+ = -log[H+]
