Water And Its Properties Flashcards
Properties of Water
- Natural Solvent
- Dispersion Medium
- Medium for Biochemical Reaction
Title of Experiment 1
Water and Its Properties
water
- serves as natural solvent for mineral ions & other substances
-dispersion medium for colloidal cells like protoplasm - most abundant component of cells
Materials (reagents) used for procedure 1: water as universal solvent
- NaCl
- Sugar
- Gelatin
- Lard
- Ethanol
- CuSO4
– 0.5 g each - Add 1 ml water until dissolved
- Add 1 ml CCl4 until dissolved
solubility of the ff. to water:
1. NaCl
2. sugar
3. gelatin
4. CuSO4
5. Ethanol
6. Lard
all soluble except lard because of its non polar nature
solubility of the ff. to CCl4:
1. NaCl
2. sugar
3. gelatin
4. CuSO4
5. Ethanol
6. Lard
all insoluble except:
lard - soluble - nonpolar
ethanol - slightly soluble - nonpolar hydrocarbon tail
materials (reagents) for procedure 2: water as medium for biochemical reactions
- 0.1 g dry powdered citric acid
- 0.1 g sodium bicarbonate
- add 10 mL water
reaction of procedure 2 (water as medium for biochemical reactions) and its product
bubbling, fizzling, cloudy
CO2, H20, sodium citrate
Procedure 3: properties of water solution materials/reagents (dialysis)
- 30 mL 1% starch-NaCl mixture
(put in dialysis bag that was soaked for 10 mins, rinse, and put in a beaker with deionized water) - 1 mL of dialyzate test with 0.1 M AgNo3
Reaction in procedure 3 dialysis
- white precipitate (AgCl)
- silver chloride confirms presence of chloride ions
Procedure 3: properties of water solution materials/reagents (osmosis)
10% sucrose solution
Reaction in procedure 3 osmosis
solution has not migrate outward; water migrate inwards, balancing the concentration of the solutions on both sides of the membrane.
dialysis definition
separation of particles in a liquid on the basis of differences in their ability to pass thru a membrane
osmosis definition
movement of water molecules thru a permeable membrane from an area of lower concentration to higher solute concentration until equilibrium is reached
Different functions of water in living system
- regulate body temp
- keeps organs hydrated
- protect cells
- carries nutrients and oxygen
- provides lubrication to the joint
application of osmosis
plants absorb water from the soil thru their roots by osmosis
application of dialysis
remove toxins from the blood with acute kidney disease patients
