water and carbon cycle relationships Flashcards
what is a positive feedback loop
the amplification of the original consequence
what is a negative feedback loop
the nulification of an original consequence
what do both cycles have in common
both have an effect on the climate, but both also are impacted by the climate
what is the albedo effect
a positive feedback loop in which as the climate gets hotter, there are less relfective surfaces such as snow and ice so there is less deflection back into space, leading to further temp increases
what is the permafrost effect
permafrost is an area of land which has been permamently frozen for 2 or more years. as temps rise this permafrost melts and releases co2 into the envrionment, further increasing temps.
what is the cloud feedback
as temps rise, there is more evapotranspiration which leads to more water vapour in the atmosphere, this creates clouds and consequently these clouds can reflect more solar radiation.
what is the methane hydrates effect
a change in the thermohaline circulation can release deep sea methane
what is carbon fertilisation effect
as more co2 is in the atmosphere, there are faster rates of photosynthesis so plants grow quicker, this growth will lead to more co2 being taken in by vegetation. 25 % of co2 emissions are removed by plants
how do the oceans and carbon link
ocean temps are rising as more co2 enters them
links between carbon and rain
higher co2 levels have caused higher temps, which in turn has seen higher levels of precipitation in areas but droughts in others.
