Water (3) Flashcards
what is hydrology
This is the study of movement, distribution and quality of water on the earth
What is the water cycle
The water cycle is the movement of water on land and in the sea, as well as the atmosphere
How much water is stored in the ocean?
97.2%
How much in glaciers
2.15%
How much in groundwtaer?
0.62%
Where does the UKs prevailing weather come from
The rain comes from the south west depositing rain on the western mountains
How do you calculate discharge?
this is surface area x speed of the river
How to measure the speed of the river
can be measured with a flow rate meter
What caused the really bad flood of the river taff
It was caused by high tides as well as huge rainful, the two met and there was a huge swelling of water causing the river banks to burst
what is hydrogeology
The study of groundwater distriution and movement in soil and solid geology
Explain poristy
the % volume of rock that is open voids and may be filled with air or open water
Explain what the water table is?
this is a subsurface area where a saturation level ocours, the water can no longer permeate down and therefore a level is formed
What are the pores above the water table called (these are partially filled)
Vadoze zone
Define Aquaifer
A layer of rock that is sufficiently porous to store water and peremeable enough to allow water to flow through it
What aquitard
A rock that may store water but flow rates and well recharge rates are slow
