water Flashcards
explain how hydrogen bonds occur between water molecules.
water is a polar molecule so negatively charged oxygen atoms attract positively charges hydrogen atoms of other water molecules.
explain the five properties of water.
it’s a metabolite - used in respiration.
its a solvent - allows metabolic reactions to occur faster, and allows transport of substances.
has high specific heat capacity - buffers changes in temperature which makes it a good habitat for aquatic organisms as temp is more stable than land.
large latent heat of vaporisation - allows cooling via evaporation, so helps organisms maintain constant internal body temperature.
has strong cohesion between water molecules - supports water columns in tube-like transport cells of plants e.g transpiration stream thru xylem.
