DNA replication Flashcards
what’s the role of the DNA helicase?
unwinds DNA and breaks hydrogen bonds between base pairs
what is the template strand?
a single stranded DNA the has been unwound and separated from the other strand
where are the free DNA nucleotides found and what do they do?
found in the nucleus and attach to complementary bases on the template strand
what is DNA polymerase?
the enzyme involved in the condensation reaction joining adjacent nucleotides together, reforming the double stranded DNA
does the strand run parallel or anti parallel?
anti parallel
what are the two ends of the strand and how is DNA read from it?
5’ end and 3’ end - DNA is always read from 5’ to 3’
what is stage 1 of DNA replication?
DNA helicase unwinds double stranded DNA breaking hydrogen bonds, leaving two template strands
what is stage 2 of DNA replication?
DNA polymerase binds at the 5’ end of the template strand of DNA
what is stage 3 of DNA replication?
free DNA nucleotides are joined together by DNA polymerase in a condensation reaction, forming phosphodiester bonds
what is stage 4 of DNA replication?
the leading strand can be copied from start to finish in one entire section
what is stage 5 of DNA replication?
the lagging strand has to be copied in sections as the double stranded DNA is being unwound
