water Flashcards

1
Q

is water polar or non polar ?

A

it is a polar molecule meaning it has an uneven distribution of charge
oxygen is more negative and than the hydrogens and the hydrogens are more positive
The joining of water molecules by weak hydrogen bonds are called cohesion

2
Q

what does the polarity of the water allow the molecules to do?

A

it allows hydrogen bonds to form with other polar molecules
hydrogen bonds between water molecules is referred as cohesion

Q

why is water having a high SHC useful

A

takes a lot of energy to raise temp
temp doesn’t fluctuate
temperature is stable for enzymes

Q

how is water having a high SLH of vaporisation useful

A

lots of energy needed to change state
meaning water isn’t lost easily and it can act as a cooling affect

Q

why does water being cohesive benifit organisms

A

water molecules stick together
meaning it’s an advantage for transpiration and water can flow up the xylem easily and create a transpiration stream
cohesion also provides high surface tension meaning organisms can live on the surface of water
