Protiens Flashcards
what groups are amino acids made of?
They are made up of amino group , carboxyl groups and r groups
What bond joins amino acids together?
Peptide bonds
Describe the primary structure
It’s the order of amino acids joined together in a polypeptide chain (by many condensation reactions)
Describe secondary structure
The sequence folded into either Alpha helix shapes or beta pleated sheets.
These chains are formed by hydrogen bonding between the H of the amino group and the O of the carboxyl group
Describe tertiary structure
The chains fold again into 3D structures due to interactions between amino acid R groups
Forming hydrogen , ionic and disulphide bonds
Describe the quaternary structure of a protein
Has more than one polypeptide chain
Formed between interactions between polypeptides
What happens when the protein is denatured
The bonds break in the tertiary and secondary structure which causes a change in shape. Therefore the shape is lost
What’s the importance of primary structure
Primary sequence determines where bonds form resulting in different 3D shapes
What’s the test for proteins?
Add biuret reagent
If there’s a colour change from blue to lilac then that indicates to a presence of peptide bonds
What’s a globular protein
Soluble proteins with biochemical functions
What’s a fibrous protein
Insoluble proteins and have structural functions
