Water Flashcards
What type of reaction is water a metabolite in
Condensation (eliminates molecule )and hydrolysis (uses molecule )
Why is water an important solvent
Metabolic reaction occur faster in solutions
How is water having a high heat capacity useful
Having a high heat cavity means it takes a large increase in heat for a small rise in water temp which mean water is good at maintaining its temperature therefor water can act as a buffer o temperature doesn’t change to quickly
Why is it important that water has relatively large Latent heat of vaporation
It mean a large amount of heat energy must be absorbed in order to turn into water vapour this means that it effective at cooling with little loss of water through evaporation
What charge to H atoms have in water
Slightly negative charge
What charge do O atoms have
Slightly positive
Why do the poles of water to attract and why is it important
+ pole of water attracted to - pole of a different water molecule each bond is weak but together they form import forces which cause h2o to stick together which give water it properties
What bond form between water molecules
Hydrogen bonds
What is cohesion
Same type of molecule is at attracted to each other
Why is cohesion important
Lows water to pulled up through the xylem
Define adhesion
2 different molecules join due to attractive forces
Explain what 5 properties that make water important to organisms
- metabolite in condensation / hydrolysis
- a solvent which means metabolic reaction can occur
- high heat capacity means it buffers temp change
- large latent heat of vaporisation so roadies a cooling effect
- cohesion between water molecules so supports columns in water
