Lipids Flashcards
What are 6 roles of lipids
- cell membrane
- energy source
- water proofing
- insulation
- protection
- non polar molecules
How are triglycerides formed
Formed via a condensation reaction between one molecule of glycerol and 3 fatty acids they form ester bonds
What is the bond called that forms between glycerol and fatty acids
Ester bonds
What is the functional group found on a fatty acids
Carboxyl group
What can fatty acids vary in length
Due to their hydrocarbon skeleton this variable region is called the R group
What is saturated fat
Has the max number of hydrogen atoms in them and doesn’t contain a hydrogen bond
What is a unsaturated fat
Carbon is not fully saturated with hydrogen atoms and has a double bond between carbon atoms
What are phosolipids
A condensation reaction 1 glycerol, 2 fatty acid molecules and 1 phosphate group
What part of the fatty acid is hydrophobic
The tail
What part of the fatty acid is hydrophilic
The head
What is the bond in phospholipid
Ester bonds
Compare and contrast triglycerides with phosolipids
- both contain glycerol
- both contain ester bonds
- fatty acids on both may be saturated or unsaturated
- both insoluble
- trigylcerides have 3 fatty acids however phospholipids have two 2 fatty acids and 1 phosphate group
- triglycerides are hydrophobic and non polar however phospholipids have hydrophobic and hydrophilic regions
