Waste Removal Structures Flashcards
1
Q
What organelles have a roll in removing waste products?
A
- Endoplasmic Reticulum (ER)
- Golgi Apparatus
- Lysosomes
- Plasma membrane
2
Q
What is the endoplasmic reticulum and its function?
A
- Interconnecting membrane sheets that divide the cytoplasm into compartments
- Produces vesicles to transport proteins within (intracellular) and between (intercellular) cells.
3
Q
What is the Golgi Apparatus?
A
A system of membranes within the cytoplasm that are able to pinch off into vesicles, which transport contents to the plasma membrane and discharge them using exocytosis.
4
Q
What are lysosomes?
A
Organelles from Golgi bodies that have digestive enzymes which break down/recycle macromolecules.
5
Q
What is the plasma membrane?
A
- Membrane that surrounds all cells
- Allows small and large molecules in and out through endocytosis and exocytosis
6
Q
What is endocytosis?
A
- “En”docytosis = in
- Molecule is enclosed within the vesicle which pinches off and transports it within the cell
7
Q
What is exocytosis?
A
- “Ex”ocytosis = exit
- Molecule transported by vesicle which joins with membrane surface and releases contents out
