Waste management & land use Flashcards
What is biodiversity?
The variety of different species of organisms within an ecosystem
Humans are increasingly having an impact on biodiversity. Why is human population rising?
Improvements in medicine and farming
More humans means an increased demand for resources. What resources do humans use?
Crude oil for fuel, energy or plastics. Coal for power stations.
Land for farming.
Why will these raw materials run out?
They are used quicker than are replaced
What is land polluted by?
Toxic chemicals for farming such as herbicides and pesticides.
Nuclear waste.
Household waste (landfills)
What is the air polluted with?
Sulfur dioxide, methane, carbon dioxide, nitrogen monoxide
What is deforestation?
Cutting down of forests
Why do humans cut down forests?
Provide timber for building materials.
Clearing land for farming, quarrying, dumping waste.
Producing paper.
If more trees are cut down, what gas will there be more of in the atmosphere?
Carbon dioxide
Why will there be more carbon dioxide as a result of deforestation?
Less trees taking in CO2 for photosynthesis.
When trees are burnt, CO2 is released.
Microorganisms feeding on dead wood release CO2 during respiration.
