Least useful. Northern Ireland councils collect waste to bring them to recycling centres where they are separated into materials such as metal, glass and paper.

Dumping waste into the ground in old quarries or natural hollows. Suitable sites have mostly been used up. People don’t want to live near them due to the fear of smell, waste and vermin.

There is many chemicals in waste. Mercury in battery can poison water in the ground, killing wildlife and possibly people. Disease could then spread in places where waste is rotting down.
