Sustainable tourism
Tourism which doesn’t damage the place where it happens, allowing it to be continued to be used by future generations
mass tourism
Large scale movement of people to tourist destination which rusts in building of hotels in vulnerable places and can have a negative impact on visitors and local communities
Responsible tourism
Should be concerned about protecting and preserving places, cultures and environment to benefit traveller and host
Ecotourism
A sustainable form of tourism which involves protecting the environment at the destination
Growth of tourism
Increased leisure time
Increased disposal income
Cheaper travel
Increased health and wealth of pensioners
Cultural negative impacts on tourism
Tourists have defaced and vandalised famous sites e.g house of Juliet in Verona or bunkers in Auschwitz- disrespectful
Locals loose sense of culture e.g hula girls losing sacred meaning
Cultural positive impacts
Opens an area to allow people to understand each other better
Preserves local buildings and heritage sites
Economic negative impacts
Leakage- when money spent on a holiday doesn’t remain in the country to benefit the local people
Seasonal jobs with low income. need more than one job
Economic positive impacts
Employment can produce considerable amount of income for local people e.g Costa Rica
Money earned can be spent on improving the area
Environmental negative impacts
Zanzibar, 685 litres of water a day. locals use 50L. sustainable water management would suggest limit of between 200-300 litres per day
Large amount of tourists on beaches and brightly light up seafronts has endangered marine turtles. they rely on dark secluded beaches to lay their eggs and when eggs hatch they often move towards the seafront and die
Environmental positive impacts
Money earned can improve treatment plants for water and sewerage
The feature tourists are looking to come see are protected
