Waste Flashcards
what is waste and where does it come from
waste is something we don’t see as useful, comes from everything
some things that may seem as waste are useful to others
in nutrient cycles, where plants use co2 which is a waste from animals or when fertiliser for roses from horses
most human waste
energy/plastic
problems with waste
growing population/increases plastic meaning more waste than ever so need more management strategies
types of waste
solid/liquid/gas
sources of waste
farming/mining/construction/fuel
waste disposal, landfill
dumping waste in environment and buried, done right can cause little damage and provide recreation areas but if bad can cause leakage, contamination, diseases etc
waste disposal incineration
burning waste, alternative as some waste cant be buried but can release harmful emissions (co2/nitrogen) but nitrogen can be used for fertiliser
policies to OECD
waste cant be moved unless its allowed by country receiving waste, movement of waste only allowed if there’s ways to dispose of waste
re-using
best way is to reuse to prevent waste being made and reduce resources used, examples of reusable bottles/bags for life
recycling
turn products into something else by using old resources, compost/wastewater
denmark
has policy to encourage recycling as it runs out of landfill space
prevent waste
stop at source, cleaner production
