Columbia Valley AVA- Most vineyards are planted here which lies east of the Cascade Mountains in the valleys of the Columbia River and its tributaries. Yakima Valley AVA and Walla Walla AVA lie within this AVA.
- This lies in the rain shadow of the Cascade Mountains, which means that irrigation is necessary.
- Winter freeze is a big problem and can reduce crops by a half or more.

Merlot - plummy, full-bodied
Cabernet Sauvignon - elegant and age-worthy
Chardonnay - most widely planted white variety with toasty notes from oak.
Riesling is also popular made in a dry style with ripe stone fruit flavours.
