USA wine laws Flashcards

Q
What is an AVA and how does it affect the labelling of wines from the USA?
A
AVA (American Viticultural Area) - vary in size and can include land in more than one state and can overlap. There are federal laws specifying the minimum percentage of grapes that must come from a single grape variety, vintage or AVA to allow these terms to appear on the label. If a wine doesn’t qualify for an AVA, then the name of the state or county will be on the label.
