- was matriarchal (governed by women)

Why did the amazons remove a breast?
A
- so they wouldn’t be hampered when throwing a spear and so their right arm would be strengthened
- symbolic rejection of femininity
- reduced their capability to nurse bábales in order to increase their ability to fight

How were the Amazons represented at the Bassae Friezes?
A
- not dressed in armour but in short tunics that allowed free movement on the battle field
- fabric draped over their bodies suggests sturdy, muscular bodies and that they aren’t gentle
- breasts are visibly exposed, reminding the viewer that they are different from the ‘average’ warrior

A

- she accidentally killed her sister with a spear when hunting
- she had so much grief that she wished only to die honourably in battle
- glorious death ensured her reputation and fame would last forever
