Why warm up
- prepare your body systems
- minimise risk of muscle/joint injury
- mentally prepare for the workout
What body systems are involved in a warm up
Cardio vascular
Muscular/skeletal
Neuro-muscular
Warm up should include
Pulse raising activity
Mobility exercises
Flexibility exercises
What to do for pulse raising
Choose safe and appropriate activity
Decide on intensity
Decide on times - 7 to 10 mins
What to do for mobility exercises
Cover joints
Intensity
Time- until joints are moving freely
What to do for flexibility
Safe and appropriate cover major muscles- static flexibility

Time- 5 to 15 seconds
Effects of an adequate warm up
- gradually increase the heart rate
- gradually increase rate of circulation in blood
- increases body temperature
- allows freer movement in the joints
- prepares joints and muscles to function though their full range of movement
- muscular efficiency
Reduce risk of injury
