Skeletal System Flashcards

1
Q

Purpose of the skeleton

A

Provides protection- skull protects brain, rib cage protects hear and lungs

Allows movement- joints allow wide range of movement

Provides a rigid structure for the attachment of the muscles

Helps produce blood cells in the larger bones of the body

Q

What is the synovial capsule

A

An outer sleeve that protects the joint and holds the bones together. It is an extension of the skin

Q

What is the synovial membrane

A

Lines the capsule and oozes slippery wet liquid called synovial fluid lubricating the joint, nourishing the cartilage and acts as a shock absorber

Q

What is the Bursae

A

Small sac structures filled with fluid, joints acting as cushions to alleviate friction

Q

What is cartilage

A

Covers end of each bone surface of a joint and synovial fluid provides a slippery surface and almost allows friction free movement

Q

What are ligaments

A

White fibrous elastic tissue holds bones in place, provides stability and prevents over movement

Q

What are tendons

A

Though bands of connective tissue, attach skeletal suckles to bones

Q

What arête longtime effects of exercise and optimal training on the skeleton

A

Skeletal tissues become stronger and criss cross structure of bones reinforced

Cartilage thickens aiding the cushioning of the joints

Tendons thicken and can withstand greater muscle force
