Skeletal System Flashcards
Purpose of the skeleton
Provides protection- skull protects brain, rib cage protects hear and lungs
Allows movement- joints allow wide range of movement
Provides a rigid structure for the attachment of the muscles
Helps produce blood cells in the larger bones of the body
What is the synovial capsule
An outer sleeve that protects the joint and holds the bones together. It is an extension of the skin
What is the synovial membrane
Lines the capsule and oozes slippery wet liquid called synovial fluid lubricating the joint, nourishing the cartilage and acts as a shock absorber
What is the Bursae
Small sac structures filled with fluid, joints acting as cushions to alleviate friction
What is cartilage
Covers end of each bone surface of a joint and synovial fluid provides a slippery surface and almost allows friction free movement
What are ligaments
White fibrous elastic tissue holds bones in place, provides stability and prevents over movement
What are tendons
Though bands of connective tissue, attach skeletal suckles to bones
What is flexion
Bending the limbs at a joint
What is extension
Straightening limbs at a joint
What is abduction
Movement away from the mid-line of the body
What us abduction
Movement towards the mid-line of the body
What is circumduction
Circular movement around a fixed point e.g. ball and socket at shoulder
What is rotation
Movement around a single long axis clockwise or anticlockwise
What is dorsiflexion
Movement of toes are brought closer to shin
What is plantar flexion
Movement of foot brought closer to back of leg
