Warm and Cold Based Glaciers Flashcards
Where do you find warm based glaciers?
In Alpine environments.
What is the climate of warm based glaciers?
There is fluctuating warmer temperatures, warmer during the summer and colder in winter.
What are the features of a warm based glaciers?
There’s lots of meltwater.
What are the processes of warm based glaciers?
There was high erosion from basal sliding, internal deformation is also present.
What is the surface temperature of warm based glaciers?
During the summer the surface temperature is 5 degrees celcius, and in the winter it is -10 degrees celcius.
What is the base temperature of warm based glaciers?
In the summer it is just below 0 with lots of melt water, in winter it is below 0 with less melt water but still some.
Where do you find cold based glaciers?
In polar environments.
What is the climate of cold based glaciers?
It is constantly dry and cold, little to no meltwater.
What are the features of a cold based glaciers?
There is little melt water.
What are the processes of cold based glaciers?
There is internal deformation only with very little basal sliding.
What is the surface temperature of cold based glaciers?
During the summer the surface temperature is -15 degrees celcius, and in the winter it is -20 to -30 degrees celcius.
What is the base temperature of warm based glaciers?
All year it is -10 degrees celcuis or colder.
