Glacial processes: Ice Movement Flashcards

1
Q

What is internal deformation?

A

When layers of ice or individual ice crystals are deformed by the weight of ice so some layers move faster than others meaning some parts of the glacier is further advanced than others.

Q

What is compressional flow?

A

When the glacier encounters a shallower gradient the ice slows down due to gravity. Friction causes the ice to thin out and extend.

Q

What is the process of rotational slip?

A

Compressed ice gets trapped in a hollow but gravity caused it to erode downwards, deepening the hollow.

Q

What is basal sliding?

A

Glacier sliding over the bedrock due to the melt water acting as a lubricant for the glacier.
