What caused the Warlord Decade?
Yuan Shikai left a “rudderless boat” with his death, as there was no successor or effective government.
What did the Warlords do?
The Warlords were only interested in keep their power. They did so by:
> China became militarised as a bigger army meant more power
Corruption, extortion and exploitation was overlooked and became normal behaviour
What was the New Culture Movement?
Led by Chen Duxiu, the group searched for non-Confucian values and seeking nationalistic ideas.
When did the New Culture Movement become political?
With the Treaty of Versailles in 1919.
What was the May 4th Movement?
3,000 students protest in Tiananmen Square launching a wave of protests and strikes against warlordism and imperialism.
What was the significance of the May 4th Movement?
The intellectual revolution begins.
It also demonstrates the weak Republican government and the urgency for finding solutions to China’s problems.
