Why was agriculture so important?
War success depended on agriculture and food; agriculture surpluses were needed to make an army, and you could see how a society was fed by how they were fighting.
What were the reasons for war?
- Enslave opposing citizens
- Gain agricultural land
- Someone wanted to move up in the social ladder
- Politics
What other external forces impacted war?
Geography/terrain - extreme heat, extreme cold, rough ground, mountains, flat or hilly land, etc.
Which societies were more open to change?
Western societies (Greece, Rome) were more dynamic, and land-owning free classes were more open to technological advancements
Why were non-Western societies not as open to change?
Less dynamic, war was more focused on religious + ethical restraints; technological advancements were also prevented in these Orient societies

A Queen of the Brigantes - they didn’t discriminate against women ruling, and she worked with the Roman empire
How are armies influential in society?
They are major, formal institutions that generate practices and values which then reshape society, and provide social mobility to the men in their armies.
