-Dark connotes depression and evil.
-Suggests he is struggling and very upset.
-Finally suggests a sense of relief that he needs to get away from what he has seen.
-Ambiguity - dark connotes his physical room is not bright and quite depressing yet we also metaphorically realise he is in a dark place mentally and feeling very distressed and upset.

-Sibilance creates a whispering tone for respect for the people.
