War
Armed conflict between two or more sides
Peace
A time of harmony, the opposite of war
Justice
Making things fair or equal
Justified
Right, legitimate, with good reason
Righteous anger / violence
Violence or anger in response to injustice or wrongdoing (Christianity teaches this is the only type of violence that is justified.)
The Just War Theory
A set of conditions that a war has to meet in order to be justified
Weapons of mass destruction
Weapons capable of killing or harming large numbers of people at once e.g. - a bomb
Nuclear deterrence
Having weapons of mass destruction only as a way of preventing others from attacking you
Nuclear disarmament
When a government reduces or completely destroys their supply of nuclear weapons
The sanctity of life
The belief that human life is sacred / holy and should therefore always be protected
Protest
A public expression of disapproval, often in a big group, can be peaceful or violent
Riot
A violent disturbance of the peace by a crowd
Civil disobedience
The refusal to comply with certain law considered unjust, as a peaceful form of political protest
Boycott
A punitive ban on relations with other bodies, cooperation with a policy, or the handling of goods
Holy war
A war that is fought for religious reasons, usually backed by a religious leader
The Crusades
A series of wars in the 11th to 13th century, fought by Christians in order to gain control over the city of Jerusalem
Plenary indulgence
The belief that God will forgive the sin of murder committed during acts of Holy war
Terrorism
The unlawful use of violence and intimidation, usually against civilians, in order to achieve a political or religious aim
Extremism
Holding extreme political or religious views which go against key social values such as democracy and tolerance
radicalisation
The process by which a person comes to support terrorism ad extremism
jihad
Islamic term: the inner personal battle to put God first in life. Sometimes this term has been misinterpreted in Islam as permission to force your faith on others
parable of the good samaritan
This is when he told the Parable of the Good Samaritan (Luke 10:25-37), to explain that people should love everyone, including their enemies.
pacifism
The belief in non-violence: the belief that violence and war are wrong
Absolute pacifism
The belief that violence is absolutely never justified under any circumstance
Conditional pacifism
The belief that violence is wrong but could sometimes be acceptable in certain circumstances
Conscientious objector
Someone who refuses to fight in a war because of their beliefs / because they believe war is morally wrong
Quaker Peace Testimony
The statement for Quakers to follow, to help quakers understand the correct thing to do in sometimes difficult times
Forgiveness
Pardoning someone for what they’ve done is wrong
Reconciliation
Working to restore a relationship after someone has done something wrong - fixing & moving on
The Lord’s Prayer
A prayer for Christians to be delivered from evil and to understand God can grant forgiveness and so we should reconcile
