Succesful bcause it allowed US to gain control over islands in the Pacific to get close enough to Japan to launch a mainland invasion

Began june 1944 and continued until the end of the war in 1945. Conducted B-29 air raids on Japan causing extensive destruction to the country’s cities and killing almost 1 million people.

Series of firebombing air raids by US on the night of 9-10 March 1945. Most destructive bombing raid in history. left 100,000 civillians dead and over 1 million homeless.

last major battle of WW2. more than 180,000 US army and US marine corps troops descended on the Pacific Islands of OKinawa for a final push towards Japan.
