Phony war
- eight-month period at the start of WW2
- Began with the declaration of war by U.K and France against Nazi Germany, after german invasion on poland.
- no physical war happening.
- Eventually germany attacks- Blitzkrieg
Germany takes over where? what is Blitzkrieg?
Norway, Denmark, Netherlands, Belgium Luxembourg and most of France.
- Use of Blitzkrieg: “lightning war” military tactic designed to create disorganisations among enemy forces through use of mobile forces and firepower.
1940-Paris Fall to Nazis
The French government departed Paris and the Germans occupied the city. Paris became governed by the German military and by French officials approved by the Germans.
1940-Coventry bombing
Three hundred German bombers dropped 500 tons of explosives, thousands of bombs on the Industrial city of Coventry (england). 507 civilians killed, 420 seriously injured.
1940- Nazi Invasion of Yugoslavia and Greece
Yugoslavia joined the axis and agreed to permit transit through its territory to German troops headed for Greece.
1941-Invasion of Soviet Union ( its ally in the war against Poland)
Germany invades soviet union nearly 2 years after signing the non-aggression pact.
1941- Germany Declares war on US in support of Japan
After pearl harbor attack, Hitler agreed to help Japan, Axis power.
1942- “Final solution” Wannsee Conference
15 high-ranking Nazi party and german government officials gathered in Berlin to discuss the “final solution of Jewish question”
Final solution” code name for physical annihilation of European Jews.
Authroized this European-wide scheme for mass murder.
Concentration Camps
Extermination camps- where all new arrivals were simply killed or put to forced labor.
Holocaust
Genocide during WW2 where Nazi aided by its collaborators, murdered over 6 million european Jews (1941-1945)
1942-1943: turning point for the allies in stalingrad
Germany invaded the Soviet Union and the Soviet union defeated Germany at Stanligrad. Turning point for Eastern Europe. The Germans weren’t able to advance any farther into eastern Europe or Russia. American and Allied troops landed on France and begin the liberation of Western Europe.
1944 D-Day/Normandy Invasion
Beginning of the end for Germany/Hitler. Because Englad has troops on the continent and Americans. THey were fighting two fronts so thats why they were able to.
Epic evacuation
England took 300,000 French and british troops to save them from Nazi (they were in France, germany was sweeping into France)
1945 Battle of bulge
Germans launch the last major offensive of the war (battle of the bulge) at an attempt to push the allied front line west from northern france to northwestern belgium.
Germans lost so many troops and equipment that they was no way their army could launch another attack.
1945 Yalta conference
conference of the three chief allied leaders: Roosevelt (US), Winston Churchill (UK), Joseph Stalin (Soviet Union)
Plan the final defeat and occupation of Nazi Germany. Unconditional surrender.
