Conflicts of Interests
territory, control of government, economic conflicts
Underlying causes of war (constructivism)
Individual: liberalism and identity (socialization), and interest formation
State: (external) economic structures/systems, political structures/systems, normative or ideational structures (internal) civil,-military relations and societal-control capabilities, identity politics
Global: anarchy (as states have made of it), shifts in the balance of power, hegemonic ambitions, material, normative, and/or ideational structures
Interstate War
when two or more national governments direct military forces against each other in organized, sustained and generally clashes
General (Major) War
involves the world’s most powerful states of the time
Hegemonic War
outcome determines the next hegemon
Total War
target civilians
Limited War
major powers aren’t directly involved; includes proxy wars
Militarized Interstate Disputes (MIDs)
states threaten to use force and move their military units near each other but clashes remain below the level of a full-scale war
Extra-State Wars
at least 1,000 deaths against a non-state
Civil War
fought between members of the same state
Secessionist Civil War
the end goal is to take a piece of territory from the initial state and create a new state
Inter-Communal War
typically categorized by conflicts between major religious groups of a region
Contagion
refugees, migrants, etc
