New Wars
Warfare changing - mass killing of buildings. Rise of terrorism.
As well as killing people has all kinds of social, economic and psychological consequences.
New Wars are messy, no longer clear whose space is whose. Low level violence directed at civilians. Rise of identity politics - civilians/hospital etc are all meshed into violence. Hate and fear motto. Ethnic cleansing
Shift to war of identity. Different ethnic groups making claims of space. Dozens of different groups for their ideology.
Use of social media - so easy to transfer money and message. We are incredibly networked. Mirrors globalisation. Guerrilla warfare now.
Advertise as global brands. Goes across borders ( migration etc) an everywhere war that can pop up everywhere. No distinct timeline therefore when will it end?
Drone warfare.
The police now resemble the army.
Us military are the leaders in drone warfare. Went from battlefield to battlespace
Alienated form of violence, global air power. Can hunt you anywhere. Networked can be controlled from anywhere. However can take place in urban civilian areas, state and non state violence. No boundaries. Therefore endless cycles
Geography of War
2014 most violent year since Cold War - 130000 killed. 2016 there were 103000 killed in conflicts around the world.
The division between non state and state has risen. Non state has risen from 61 in 2014 to 73 in 2015. Now about race and minorities
Always geographical - territorial / resources - Vietnam defeated due to jungle.
War transforms landscapes can be devastating to natural and human landscapes.
Killing all plant life and still causing birth defects in Vietnam
They demand knowledge of maps etc
Old wars
Huge national militaries. Congrats with clear fronts and lines. Was about territory, had a distinct between friend and enemy. Ww2 last great old war before the shadow of the atomic bomb. War was a state interest.
New Wars further reading
Now called the endless war. The war on terror has became the long war after 9/11
The US retaliate but how would this be if it was another country say China.
Now called battlespace - has no front or back. Constantly on the move. Trenches and old war stuff not needed.
Drone strikes - systematic and cumulative nature of the campaign. No recognition of civilian casualties.
Law and ward intertwined - political implications.
The narco war in Mexico - military targeted not only drug traffickers but undocumented immigrants. Deflected many into hiding and caused many deaths.
