A level of interaction through face to face contact on an everyday basis. Intimate, each person knows where they stand in society.
Persons worth is established by who they are and status over achievement.
Moral cultural codes of thinking is ingrained. Members of community immobile and travel locally.
Attachment to place.
That is social form. Village is spatial form. Fullest expression in small villages. No strangers with limited social difference

Changing rural.

A

The view of village life. However is changing, rural population is growing..
Loss of traditional employment, arrival of retirees and commuter and rural gentrification pushing prices up.
Blurring lines between borders - technology is helping with this.
Land developments - suburb / theme parks etc. Becoming more hybrid?
Being crafted, packed and marketed, new range of potential but what does this mean for residents?
Urban towns make decisions for rural - can cause protests.

Poverty

A

Are they forgotten. Average wage 5000 lower than national. But house prices higher etc.
People in small close knit communities. Do not have many relationships due to location - find it hard to talk? Associated with strong work ethic and self reliance however shame is true in all cases of poverty.
Rural employment is higher but low paid and seasonal - tourism or agriculture work. They face greater barriers to well paid jobs due to low density of work, cycle of no car no job. Travel poverty. Women in rural areas working part time and child care impossible.
Social housing is scarce and a lower turnover here.
Classification of towns.
Rural areas have less young people more working age and older. More pensioner households.
Young people move away - maybe move back once older?

Poverty measures

A

Low income poverty - income below certain level. Does not pick up higher costs of living in rural towns. Travel no supermarkets etc.
Deprivation - if they lack a number of necessities due to low income. Income, employment, education, skills, health, housing, crime, geographic access to services. Urban bias? Includes car ownership but different in rural.

Migration and rural

A

Shift in way migration occurs globally. Dramatic change in source and destination.
Increased no in rural. Trend gone unnoticed, why? Seen as white spaces and there is Urban bias.
Concealing and marganising non white in rural. Excluded in both popular culture and research. Rural bias that it does not change and develop the way Urban does. Rural increased recreation and yourself. Jobs low wages poor working conditions but migrants will work. Resurgence of agriculture industries - chains/ economy.
Patterns of insecure low wage employment - undocumented immigrants
