Urban Flashcards
Segregation
Gemeinshaft in the city - the idea of multi cultural but also ethnic segregation
Growth of economic inequality is concentrated. These divisions are increasingly policed and militized e. G. Homeless studs
Insides and outsides - reorganised lives of rich and poor - never have to interact.
Brazil good example. The geography of exclusion
Urbanisation
Urban living increasing. 54% in 2014 expected 66% in 2050. This is a trend that is not stopping of slowing down.
Growth concentrated in developing countries - India, Nigeria, China. Account for 37% of projected growth by countries. Still, home to 90% of rural.
Mega cities - in 1990 there was 10 in 2014 there was 28. Tokyo population of 38 million.
Are we just evolving? Becoming a city species. Our likelihood is in the city - work entertainment etc.
Habitats we could concentrate gov etc in city. Associated with higher levels of education, social services.
However still places of diversity - millions live in in sub standard Dickensian slum conditions. Segregation still rampant.
Planet of slums - Urban life is very different in global south and north. Instead of building tower blocks - can happen in slums.
Urbanisation of poverty. There is no single city life experience - they differ even inner city to city.
Loneliness
No real connection to space. High levels of mobility and rarely dwelling on environment. We are all so packed together but distant.
Even though we work, live and move together it is mostly anon, we don’t know our neighbors anymore. In the US 40% AR lonely. 1 in 5 have only 1 close friend. In the UK 1 in 10 say they have no close friends. 53% of young people have felt alone, ethnic minorities are overrepresented.
Can have devastating affect of mental and physical health. Could also contribute to alienation/crime/radicalisation. Perhaps our psychological is linked to the spaces we are in. Environmental.
Modern western lifestyles. More lone working means less relationships social ties. Also pressure to achieve - work over social life.
Need to build personal resilience but this is not one size fits all. By building communities there is no clear division between giver and receiver of service. Reduce the stigma..
No of people living alone in Stockholm increased to 58% highest in Europe.
Japan making business off of it - cat cafes, temporary friends, cuddle rentals etc.
Society compels us to drive for self sufficiency but holds us back.
