Q

Okay. I’m sorry. I didn’t mean to… I didn’t think about it. I haven’t slept in so
long, but I’ve been getting tired lately. For the first time in centuries. I’m
suddenly so tired.

A

What does it feel like?

Q

Like you’re heavy. Like all of you is falling slowly, and you have to keep yourself
up. Like if you just let go for a second, or stop trying, you’ll just… blink out.

A

Oh. I think I’m tired too.

22
Q

What’s wrong?

A

I don’t like it when you sleep.

23
Q

I know. You told me that

A

No, but it’s… more than that, it’s… I don’t like you being… gone like that.

24
Q

Okay. I’ll try not to sleep again.

A

It’s not… it… I can feel you fading away already. Every day there’s been less and less of you.

25
Q

I’m still here.

A

You won’t be.

26
Q

Hey. I will be.

A

Stop it.

27
Q

What?

A

Just stop it.

28
Q

I was just trying to…

A

I know what you were trying to. Just stop.

29
Q

I’m sorry.

A

I don’t want you to make this okay.

30
Q

I don’t understand.

A

This. It’s not okay

31
Q

Okay…

A

And you can’t make it better. So I don’t want you to try, because it just makes it worse. This isn’t okay. And I’m going to be upset about it.

32
Q

But it doesn’t have to be sad.

A

Stop.

33
Q

It doesn’t.

A

What did I just say?

34
Q

No I know-

A

No, look. I know you see everything as beautiful and, I don’t know, cosmically
fated or something. I know that to you, everything has this gorgeous purpose. And
I know you need me to see that, too, and to see how all of this is really some cog
or wheel in a great, divine machine, or… I don’t know! You know, I don’t know
what you want but I can’t give it to you. Because this isn’t beautiful to me. It’s
just sad. And I’m so tired of you needing to talk it out and find the nuance or I
don’t even know what, because it doesn’t change anything. I’m sad. I’m sad and
I’m scared. I’m so scared. And there’s nothing beautiful about that. There
shouldn’t have to be.

35
Q

You can be sad. You can be scared.

A

I don’t need you permission.

36
Q

That’s not what I’m saying.

A

Then what?

37
Q

Just… It doesn’t have to be sad…

A

Oh my

38
Q

No, but, it doesn’t have to be beautiful either. It doesn’t have to be anything.

A

But it has to happen.

39
Q

Yes.

A

Why?

40
Q

I don’t know.

A

You could stay.

41
Q

No. I couldn’t.

A

Right, sorry.

42
Q

I’m scared too, you know.

A

Of what?

43
Q

Everything’s so different from when I left. I don’t know how I’m supposed to
just… go back. And I won’t know a soul.

A

You didn’t know a soul here and that worked out okay.

44
Q

Yes, well, there were fewer souls to contend with

A

But isn’t that what you want? All those people, you watch them and talk about
how beautiful they are, and now you’ll finally be with them again, right up close,
just like you’ve always wanted.

45
Q

Maybe I’ll just see the creases and the dirt, and be disgusted by
strangers on the street just like everyone else.

A

Maybe other people would get distracted like that, but you won’t.

46
Q

How do you know?

A

I don’t know a lot about life. But I know you. I promise, you’ll still see. And if
you don’t, it’s not that long anyway.

47
Q

No time at all.

A

Can I ask you a favor?

48
Q

What?

A

Don’t go to sleep before you have to go. Please

49
Q

Okay.

A

Promise?

50
Q

Promise.

A

Thank you.

51
Q

For what?

A

This. I don’t know. Everything.

52
Q

You’re welcome.
I have to go soon.

A

I know.
Don’t fall asleep.

53
Q

I’m not.

A

Okay. good.
