Wanikani Flashcards
離
Detach
り
( Rocket + Turkey)
You shoot a rocket at a turkey to detach its head from its body. The rocket hits the turkey, and its head becomes detached from its body. The turkey is now dead.
HINT: You really want to dismember this turkey with a rocket. Visualize the rocket detach its head from its body, detach the legs and detach the wings in your mind. See it all happening as the rocket explodes. Boom.
The reason you want to detach the limbs from this turkey is that the turkey is actually a piñata and inside him are a ton of Reese’s (り) Pieces. You love Reese’s Pieces so you just gotta blow up this turkey. (HINT: Imagine seeing the limbs of the turkey detach from its body as the rocket explodes him open and Reese’s Pieces go flying everywhere. Open your mouth and catch them, letting the peanut buttery chocolate goodness melt in your mouth.)
編
Knit
へん
(Thread + Bookshelf)
Taking some thread and sitting by a bookshelf, you begin to knit. You knit by this bookshelf because you don’t know how to knit, and the bookshelf is filled with books on how to knit.
HINT: Imagine reading these how to knit books as you attempt to knit with this thread. It’s not easy, and the going is slow. Feel frustrated with your progress.
You’re trying to knit because your pet hen (へん) gets cold in the winter. To warm up your hen, you want to knit a small little hen sweater for it to wear. (HINT: Imagine trying to knit this hen sweater for your hen. Imagine what it will look like once it’s finished as you feel the thread and the knitting needles in your hands.)
既
Previously
き
(Good + Fang)
You had a good fang previously, but now that fang is worthless. Previously, when you were young, all of your fangs were good. Now that you are old, your fangs are dull and worn.
HINT: Think back to this good fang that you had previously. Imagine feeling the fang with your tongue and reminiscing over what a good fang it was.
To remember your old but good fang and other things that happened previously, you keep a diary in a locked box. You hide the key (き) for it around your neck on a chain. That way the key is always with you and you’ll never lose it. (HINT: Previously you didn’t have a key, but now you do. Feel the cold metal of the key on your skin as the necklace moves about on your neck.)
融
Dissolve
ゆう
( Chester + Insect )
Chester the Molester takes an insect and proceeds to dissolve it in some acid. Chester is pretty messed up in the brain, so he likes to do things like dissolve insects in his spare time.
HINT: See Chester the Molester dropping drops of acid onto this insect, dissolving pieces one by one. Look at the insect squirm in pain as its limbs get dissolved.
Just when the last bit of the insect begins to dissolve, you finally work up the courage to confront Chester. “YOU (ゆう)! You… you… JERK!” (HINT: Okay so maybe you’re not the best with words, but the important part is that you called Chester out. Good job, you.)
普
Normal
ふ
( Line up + Sun )
You line up your body with the sun and everything looks normal. The sun is lined up behind you, and you’re looking at all the things the sun has lit up. Everything looks normal.
HINT: Gaze out in a line from the sun as you observe the world. Everything is very normal looking and comforting.
Soon you see something that doesn’t look so normal. It’s a fool (ふ), a jester. Dressed all in fool’s garb, this fool is dancing up towards you with a ridiculously unsettling grin on his face. (HINT: Imagine this creepy looking fool as he approaches. He’s kind of freaking you out. Feel very uncomfortable as you continue looking at this fool.)
華
Showy
か
( Flowers + Potato )
The flowers next to the potato are a little showy, don’t you think? I don’t believe the flowers are needed. The flowers are too showy. Just the potatoes are fine.
HINT: Imagine the flowers next to the potatoes. Sure they smell nice, but they’re a bit showy, gaudy, and unnecessary.
The flowers are too showy so you get in a car (か) and drive the flowers over to your friend’s house to give them the flowers. They don’t need to know where the flowers came from, it’s the thought that counts. So get in your car and drive on over! (HINT: See the showy flowers on the seat next to you as you drive over to your friend’s house. Visualize which friend you’re going to see as you hear the car engine roar.)
救
Rescue
きゅう
( Request + Winter )
You request that winter rescue you from the warmth. It’s summer but you want it to be winter. You request that winter rescue you from the summer weather.
HINT: It’s so hot. You need a rescue. Imagine the cool of winter rescuing you from this hot, hot heat.
If you don’t receive a rescue soon, your cute (きゅう) rabbit pet is going to melt. Winter needs to get here soon or your cute rabbit is going to die from the heat. (HINT: Imagine your poor cute rabbit melting in the heat. If only winter had come to rescue him sooner. Oh, such woe!)
