Q

Fibrous pericardium

A
  • protects the heart
  • anchors and recents over stretching
  • outer layer

Q

Serous pericardium

A
  • parietal (pericardium) and visceral (epicardium) layers

- serous fluid in between the two layers to keep a frictionless environment

Q

Pericarditis

A
  • inflamed pericardium causing loss of serous fluid
  • loss of fluid causes layers to stick together interfering with the heart’s movement
  • can cause fluid accumulation in the pericardial cavity, compressing the heart

Q

Myocardium

A
  • thick wall of cardiac muscle bundles twisted into rings
  • forces out the blood out of heart chambers in wringing motion
  • reinforced internally by DCT
  • cells are linked together with intercalated discs at gap junctions to communicate rapidly (allowing ions to pass from cell to cell carrying a wave of excitement across the heart)

Q

Endocardium

A
  • simple squamous epithelial Tissue lines the heart chambers and covers valves
  • continuous with linings of blood vessels entering and leaving the heart
  • helps blood flow smoothly
