Walls Of The Heart Flashcards
1
Q
Walls of heart composition
A
- epicardium, or visceral pericardium (outer)
- myocardium (mid)
- endocardium (inner)
2
Q
Covering of the walls
A
- fibrous pericardium
- serous pericardium
3
Q
Fibrous pericardium
A
- protects the heart
- anchors and recents over stretching
- outer layer
4
Q
Serous pericardium
A
- parietal (pericardium) and visceral (epicardium) layers
- serous fluid in between the two layers to keep a frictionless environment
5
Q
Pericarditis
A
- inflamed pericardium causing loss of serous fluid
- loss of fluid causes layers to stick together interfering with the heart’s movement
- can cause fluid accumulation in the pericardial cavity, compressing the heart
6
Q
Myocardium
A
- thick wall of cardiac muscle bundles twisted into rings
- forces out the blood out of heart chambers in wringing motion
- reinforced internally by DCT
- cells are linked together with intercalated discs at gap junctions to communicate rapidly (allowing ions to pass from cell to cell carrying a wave of excitement across the heart)
7
Q
Endocardium
A
- simple squamous epithelial Tissue lines the heart chambers and covers valves
- continuous with linings of blood vessels entering and leaving the heart
- helps blood flow smoothly
