Blood Pressure Flashcards
1
Q
Definition
A
- pressure of blood exerted against inner walls of blood vessels
- varies on the elasticity of larger arteries (in their ability to recoil)
2
Q
Pressure
A
- decreased as Vessels travel further from the heart
- high in arteries, low in capillaries, and lowest in veins
3
Q
Measuring BP
A
- systolic: at the peak of ventricular contraction
- diastolic: when ventricles are relaxed
- in (mmHg)
4
Q
Normal BP
A
- systolic: 110-140mmHg
- diastolic: 75-80mmHg
- varies on age, physical activity, etc.
5
Q
High blood pressure (hypertension)
A
- 140/90<
- caused by fever, physical exertion, and anxiety or surprise
- on long term: strains heart, damaging arteries accelerating atherosclerosis
- also, enlarged myocardium lead to a weaker heart and flabbier walls
6
Q
Low blood pressure (hypotension)
A
- > 100mmHg
- result of physical conditioning
- caused by poor nutrition
- orthostatique hypotension: temporary low BP from sudden rise from inclined position
7
Q
Atherosclerosis
A
-disease where plaques build in arteries, hardening them
