There was leftover oil from a pan that Addie refused to clean (she cleaned everything else and Mommers said she would clean it and never did). Addie put on the tea kettle to make hot chocolate and put on the wrong burner and overheated the pan with the old oil.
Why is Addie finally taken away from her mother?
Because she leaves Addie home alone for days. Addie has always been the one to care for her sisters when they all lived together and Mommers would leave for days then as well.
