A: Shay, who shares the same birthday as Tally, has run away to avoid her operation because she doesn’t want to turn Pretty. Dr. Cable of Special Circumstances in the city wants Tally to help find Shay and the Smokies. Tally is threatened – she must help them or she will remain Ugly forever. Tally wants to be Pretty and therefore sets off to help find Shay.

Shay has left Tally a series of clues that she could solve and get to The Smoke by hoverboard.

They must be flying over metal or metal deposits in order to fly.

What happens to the relationship between Shay and Tally when Tally arrives at The Smoke?
It is strained when David forms a crush on Tally. Shay was pining for David. Also strained and distant because Tally knows she is going to turn on her friend and those at The Smoke because she doesn’t want to remain an Ugly forever.

It is activated because it has been damaged. Special Circumstances arrives and invades The Smoke the next morning.

Magazines that show how “the Rusties” looked. The way people looked before Pretty operations.
What decision does Tally have to make at the end in order to save Shay from Special Circumstances and becoming Pretty?
She has to become Pretty herself.
What can David’s mother, Maddy, do when Tally turns pretty?
David’s parents had invented a pill that will allow the Pretty brain to heal itself. Tally would turn pretty so that it could be tested, and so that she can get Shay back to The Smoke like Shay always wanted.

A heart-shaped pendant that will notify Special Circumstances when Tally looks into it
