On her 16th birthday, why is Tally’s operation delayed?
A: Shay, who shares the same birthday as Tally, has run away to avoid her operation because she doesn’t want to turn Pretty. Dr. Cable of Special Circumstances in the city wants Tally to help find Shay and the Smokies. Tally is threatened – she must help them or she will remain Ugly forever. Tally wants to be Pretty and therefore sets off to help find Shay.
How does Tally know where to find Shay?
Shay has left Tally a series of clues that she could solve and get to The Smoke by hoverboard.
How do hoverboards fly?
They must be flying over metal or metal deposits in order to fly.
What food does Tally eat daily on her voyage to The Smoke?
Spagbol. Dehydrated Spaghetti Bolognese.
What happens to the relationship between Shay and Tally when Tally arrives at The Smoke?
It is strained when David forms a crush on Tally. Shay was pining for David. Also strained and distant because Tally knows she is going to turn on her friend and those at The Smoke because she doesn’t want to remain an Ugly forever.
What must Tally do to alert Special Circumstances of her arrival at The Smoke?
Activate the pendant that was provided to her by Special Circumstances.
What does Tally learn from David’s parents, Maddy & Az, who used to be Doctors in the city?
When Uglies become Pretties their brains are altered along with their appearances.
What decision does Tally make after she learns about the brain damage to Pretties?
She throws the pendant into the fire.
What happens when Tally throws the pendant into the fire?
It is activated because it has been damaged. Special Circumstances arrives and invades The Smoke the next morning.
What does an old Smokie keep at “the library”?
Magazines that show how “the Rusties” looked. The way people looked before Pretty operations.
What decision does Tally have to make at the end in order to save Shay from Special Circumstances and becoming Pretty?
She has to become Pretty herself.
