What are the symptoms of attention-deficit hyperactivity (ADHD) disorder? (7)
How do u determine that it is ADHD?
1 Short attention span + easily distracted
2 Doesn’t listen, cant complete work/tasks on time
3 Find it hard to plan activities, avoid doing difficult mental work
4. Find it hard to do things quietly & wait for their turn
5 Often loses things & forgetful
6 Restless,
7 Talks excessively, blurts out answers before qn/impulsive, interrupts ppl
- CONSISTENT behaviour: 6 symptoms present for 6 mths
- Symptoms MUST be present in 2 or more situations
- Poor r/s with peers: ppl may percieve children with ADHD as more aggressive, bossier & less likeable
What’s the treatment and the goal of pharmacotherapy for ADHD?
Pharmacotherapy.
- Ritalin, Dexedrine, Adderall, and Focalin
- Stimulants that improve focus & reduce hyperactivity
- Manage & Reduce symptoms like hyperactivity, inattentiveness & impulsiveness -> allow child to grow & develop normally
What are the nursing interventions for ADHD?
1 Establish & maintain gd r/s w client & family
2 Reduce risk of injury
- Explain consequences of dangerous behaviour -> Give specific feedback on how to correct it
- Assess frequency & severity of accidents
3 Improve social & communication skills
- Identify factors worsening their behaviour
- Teach them how to interact with people
- Give simple instructions slowly
- Teach caregivers to use the same strategies at home
4 Manage medication side effects
- Give other meds to reduce insomnia, stomachache, reduced appetite & mild dysphoria
- Reduce dosage of current meds: help with lethargy & headaches
