W8 Flashcards
3 main forms of qualitative data collection
Interviews, participant observation field notes, written documents
Inductive
Analysing data with little or no predetermined theory, structure or framework, uses then actual data to derive the structure of analysis
Deductive
Predetermined framework is in place to analyse the data
Coding
Applying codes to qualitative data as part of analysis
Coding strategies DFAS
Descriptive or open coding, focusing coding, axial to interpretive coding, selective coding
Thematic analysis
Identifying recurring themes through reading and rereading data, inductive approach
Content analysis
Deductive approach, codes are identified before they are searched for in the data, categories explored statistically
Code
a word or short phrase that symbolically assigns a summative, salient essence capturing for a proportion of data
Framework analysis 5 steps (FITSS)
Interconnected stages of data analysis: 1. familiarisation, 2. identifying thematic framework, 3. indexing and charting, 4. summarising data, 5. mapping and interpretation
What is qualitative data analysis
Looks for patterns of ideas or themes
