Research consumer
Is a person who has a basic understanding of the research process and critical appraisal skills that provide a standard for evaluating the strength and weaknesses of research studies before applying them into clinical practice
Paradigm
A position or understanding of a viewpoint of the world which covers philosophical assumptions that are shared by a community of scholars
Research paradigm
Guides researchers approach to a variety of research-related activities that include data collection, analysis and interpretation

Quantitative and qualitative methodology are divided into three philosophical paradigms
Positivism, interpretivism and critical approach
Positivism
Philosophical position that reflects the traditional scientific approach of observation, prediction and testing of causal relationships (quantitative), data collected following strict procedures
Interpretivism
Aims to generate, describe, explore and generate meanings within a social or practice context (qualitative).
Positivism is characterised by
Determinism, objectivity and deductive reasoning
Critical approach
Uses qualitative to examine phenomena of interest
