W7 L3 - Design Strategy; SDLC Later Phases Flashcards
What is the requirement of the Design Phase?
System specification. The design phase answers AS TO HOW the solution (all components) will operate.
System Analysts work on technical
Business Analysts work on non-technical “design”
What are the reasons to buy a system?
- time constraints – get value faster
- System exists – makes it convenient cheaper (place a cap on resources)
- Risk
- How much support the vendor will give you (could the vendor help you)
- Values of vendor – working relationship, can you sustain it long term
What are the reasons for making a system?
- Flexibility, it is highly customisable
- System does not exist
- More control over what goes into it
- Integration with other systems in the organisation (legacy system)
- Cost/benefit analysis – sometime could be cheaper (usually not though)
- Experience or expertise in org – you want to leverage this
- Looking at expanding the business (future planning)
- Competitive advantage – how will this aid the business
- Management support – need mgmt to know that a project will take time and resources
Define design options
“…to define the solution approach, identify opportunities to improve the business, allocate requirements across solution components, and represent design options that achieve the desired future state.”
- Define approach (option)
- Identify Improvement Opportunities
- Requirements Allocation
- Describe options
What is “recommend solution”
“… to estimate the potential value for each design option and to establish which one is most appropriate to meet the enterprise’s requirements.”
What is the alternative matrix
Have alternate options, give a value to each option and rank then decide which option is the best one.
Exam Prep Questions
- What is/are the purpose, key considerations, key activities, final deliverable of the design phase?
- What is the relationship between the analysis phase and the design phase?
- How does a BA conclude what solution option to recommend?
- What are the generic design strategies, their pros and cons, and their suitability characteristics? Why is a “hybrid” strategy (combination of options) often necessary?
