Changing behavior
Change attitudes – by changing beliefs or evaluations
Change subjective norm – by changing beliefs or motivations
Downstream intervention
targeted at individuals providing informational inputs to educate, persuade & motivate. Examples media campaigns, product advertising, one-to-one advice/counselling.
Upstream intervention
economic incentives, structural changes, legislation, aimed at creating social structures & environmental cues that will disrupt old environmental cues & establish new ones that promote habitual behaviour that is desirable (to a social or economic institution).
Examples
integrated public transport, congestion charges,
community sports facilities,
suburban/out-of-town supermarkets, fast food outlets in deprived areas
intensive distribution of FMCGs, illicit drugs,
school meals, tuck shops & breakfast clubs.
