W4 Lecture 1 13/02 Flashcards
What is the nervous system?
Collection of specialised cells which generate and conduct electrical signals
What is it used for? (4)
Communicating (e.g. sensation), integration, processing, stimulating responses
On which specialised cells do electrical signals occur on?
Muscle and neurons
What does the central nervous system consist of?
The brain and the spinal cord
Where is the brain located? and what is it surrounded by?
In the cranial cavity. Surrounded by meninges.
What are the 4 divisions of the brain?
Cerebrum, diencephalon, cerebellum, brainstem
Cerebrum (4)
Divided many ways, generates conscious thought, responsible for memory & reasoning emotions, grey matter = cortex
Four types of cortex
Motor, sensory, sensory association, multimodal
Motor
Muscle, movement, action
Sensory
Sensation
